Gutters and downspouts

A roof and its gutters are one system. Getting the roof right and leaving failed gutters underneath it just moves the problem to the foundation.

Gutters are formed on site as one continuous run, so a straight elevation has no joints in it except at the corners and the outlets. Fewer seams, fewer leaks. Five inch is standard on most houses here; six inch is worth it on a large or steep roof, or anywhere the existing gutters overshoot in heavy rain.

Most of the water damage blamed on gutters is actually a downspout problem — undersized, blocked, or discharging straight against the foundation. Where a basement is damp, that is the first thing worth looking at.

What gets fitted

  • Seamless aluminum gutter, formed on site, in 5" or 6" K-style.
  • Downspouts sized and positioned for the roof area actually draining to them.
  • Gutter guards where the property has trees close enough to justify them.
  • Fascia and rake board repair where the existing timber will not hold a gutter spike or hanger.
  • Discharge run out and away from the foundation rather than beside it.

If gutters are being replaced as part of a roof, they go on after the roof, so the drip edge and the gutter line work together rather than fighting each other.
