Exterior painting and finishing

Exterior paint fails from bad preparation far more often than from bad paint. The prep is the job; the coats at the end are the easy part.

Exterior work here means houses, trim, decks and foundation walls. What determines whether it lasts five years or fifteen is what happens before the first coat — washing, scraping back to something sound, spot-priming bare timber, and dealing with the reason the last coat failed rather than covering it.

Sherwin-Williams materials are used throughout. Decks are cleaned and, where the old finish is failing, stripped rather than coated over.

What gets painted

  • Exterior siding, trim, soffit, fascia and porch ceilings.
  • Windows and doors, including reglazing on older sashes.
  • Decks and porch floors — cleaning, stripping, staining, sealing.
  • Railings, pergolas and fencing.
  • Foundation walls and parging, above grade.
  • Iron railings and exterior metalwork.

Painting is scheduled around the weather and the dew point rather than the calendar. A coat put on a damp surface or too late in the day in October will not last, and it is better to move a day than to lose a season.
